The Bascom is bringing together a well-crafted history of one of the most loved art forms—glass art—in its upcoming exhibition, Glass Pioneers: Western North Carolina and the Studio Glass Movement.
Glass Pioneers will captivate viewers’ attention by featuring works from world-renowned glass artists, including Harvey Littleton, the “father” of American Studio Glass (featured in the main image), his son John Littleton, and daughter-in-law Kate Vogel. Their art, as well as that of other influential North Carolina glass artists, tells a story exploring the region’s traditions and history of glass art in this new exhibition.
The Bascom is thrilled to be able to show visitors local artistic talent by portraying the past, present, and future of glass artistry all in one expansive collection. Visitors are invited to enter the world of glass artistry and immerse themselves in the intricate beauty of the delicate and substantial pieces on display.
The works of the Littletons and Vogel, with their various movements, colors, and dimensions, are a unique testament to the region’s artistic heritage. As trailblazers, these artists charm and educate Western North Carolina with their immense talent, using complex materials to create masterpieces.
Fellow artist Alysia Fischer meticulously curated this latest exhibition, bringing a new perspective to the exhibition with her profound study and understanding of glass art.
The Bascom’s 2024 annual theme – legacies – celebrates how artists leave an imprint on the communities around them. Glass Pioneers is a crystal clear cut of how artists contribute and get inspiration from their communities through innovative work. This symbiotic relationship of inspiring and educating is what The Bascom’s exhibits are all about.
Glass Pioneers: Western North Carolina and the Studio Glass Movement will be displayed in the Bunzl Gallery at The Bascom from May 11 through August 3. A complimentary public reception will be held on July 11 at 5 pm.
