Muddy River Distillery, located in Belmont, North Carolina and on the banks of the Catawba River was the first rum distillery and just the fifth distillery in the state. Owner, Robbie Delaney, with an obsession for making good quality rum, started the distillery in late 2011 and was legally allowed to make liquor in early 2012. Since then he has produced a variety of tasty rums including Carolina Rum, a smooth silver rum perfect for sipping or mixing with your favorite cocktails and the popular Queen Charlotte’s Reserve Rum. Queen Charlottes Reserve is a small batch rum handcrafted tediously and aged in American white oak barrels. Their Reserve Rum is smooth, yet rich and complex and has gained notoriety around the city for its sophisticated flavors. These flavors come from just three simple ingredients, molasses, sugar, and yeast, blended in a completely signature style by Muddy River. If you haven’t had a chance to savor either of the distillery’s rums, do it this summer. With so many refreshing and tasty rum recipes perfect for the warmer months, you won’t regret it. Here are three of our own creations, all concocted with Muddy Rivers Queen Charlotte’s Reserve, for your sampling. Daiquiri
INGREDIENTS:
1 oz Fresh lime juice
1 oz Simple syrup (one part sugar, one part water)
2 oz Queen Charlottes Reserve Rum
Garnishwith lime
Pour into Martini Glass
METHOD:
First, the lime juice goes into your shaker. Then pour the simple syrup in. Stir and then add the rum. Add ice and then give it a good shake. Strain into a martini glass and serve.
Rum Old Fashioned
INGREDIENTS:
3 oz Queen Charlottes Reserve Rum
3 dashes bitters
2 teapoons of simple syrup
1 cherry and orange slice
METHOD:
Add one orange slice and one cherry to a rocks glass. Next add the simple syrup and bitters. Muddle ingredients. Be sure to remove peel before adding rum. Add ice and Queen Charlottes Reserve Rum and stir. Garnish with additional cherry and orange slice if you like.
Dark and Stormy
INGREDIENTS:
1 oz fresh lime juice
1 oz ginger syrup
1 Ginger beer
3 oz Queen Charlottes Reserve Rum
METHOD:
Add lime juice and ginger syrup to a pint glass. Pour ginger beer over the lime and syrup. Top off the drink with 3 oz. of Queen Charlottes Reserve Rum. Feel free to split the Dark & Stormy by pouring into two high ball glasses. Garnish with lime and enjoy.
