Saint Mary’s School is a place for young women to grow academically, socially, and spiritually.
Located just minutes outside the hustle and bustle of downtown Raleigh sits Saint Mary’s School, a historic, all-girls boarding and day school for grades nine through 12.
Saint Mary’s opened in 1842 with a modest 13 students. Over the past 179 years, the college preparatory school has grown tremendously. Today, the 23-acre campus is home to nearly 300 young women from around the world. Though Saint Mary’s started from humble beginnings, they’ve stayed true to their founding values: to challenge girls academically, socially, and spiritually.
According to the Saint Mary’s administration, the all-girl environment encourages young women to step outside their comfort zone, to engage their mind in deep and meaningful ways, and to find strength in their voices.
“At Saint Mary’s, we challenge girls academically to be bold, to be inspired, to be prepared, and to become extraordinary,” says Carol Killebrew, Interim Head of School.
The inclusive and nurturing learning environment allows students to freely explore their interests without fear of judgement. And, with an 8:1 student-to-faculty ratio and an average class size of 13, students who are struggling won’t get lost in the shuffle of the academic system. In fact, 100 percent of Saint Mary’s graduates are accepted into college, from Ivy Leagues, to state universities, and private institutions.
Saint Mary’s is also committed to educating and encouraging young women to follow paths in underrepresented fields such as STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). They focus on developing what they call “key competencies” which include: critical thinking skills, cross-cultural intelligence, and new media literacy.
As an Episcopal school, Saint Mary’s values the worth and dignity of all who enter it’s doors. The diverse campus welcomes students from across the world to live and learn beside one another. The school’s ultimate goal is to prepare girls for not only college, but life beyond.
