A staple of European dessert and street food culture, the Belgian waffle emigrated over to America as breakfast fare (first it underwent a name change too: In Belgium, it’s actually called a Brussels waffle). Not everyone gets this dish right here in the US of A, but SouthPark’s Cafe Monte, as usual, is predictably on point.
Instead of drowning the pastry in toppings or sweets, theirs is simple and perfectly rendered. Even if you’re typically a savory breakfast eater, this waffle is still right up your alley: It’s a light batter, complete with the traditional large squares and deeper pockets that allow for all the butter and syrup you’d like (or not—dust a little confectioners sugar and you’re set, too). Paired with a hot cup of coffee and good company, this is the breakfast or brunch dish that’s been missing from your rotation.
