Tucked into one of Charleston’s most quietly charming neighborhoods, The Ansonborough Charleston offers an elegant homebase for a Lowcountry weekend. Formerly known as The Ansonborough Inn, the property completed a multimillion-dollar renovation. It officially relaunched in September 2024, reintroducing itself as a reimagined luxury inn that still feels deeply local.
The Ansonborough Charleston: Historic Bones, Modern Design
Housed in a former stationer’s warehouse dating back to 1901, The Ansonborough has long been part of Charleston’s architectural fabric. The recent renovation, led by Studio 11 Design, preserved that historic backbone while layering in thoughtful modern updates. Exposed brick walls, heart pine beams, antique mirrors, and curated local artwork anchor the space, while fresh finishes and contemporary furnishings bring a sense of ease and polish. One of the most unique parts of the Ansonborough are the sweeping ceilings and the fact that they offer the largest guest rooms in Charleston. My room, a king suite, was plenty big enough to have been an upscale studio apartment.

All 45 guest rooms have been fully redesigned with comfort and character in mind. Expect warm textures, subway tile baths, quartz countertops, and subtle local references like brick detailing and palmetto motifs. Some rooms even feature in-room Peloton bikes, a welcome perk for travelers who like to keep a routine while on the road. Throughout the property, communal spaces have been expanded and rethought. The spaces invite guests to linger — whether that’s in the new lobby, shared sitting areas, or over a drink downstairs.
Scarborough & Squirrel is the inn’s new pub-style bar. Equal parts neighborhood gathering spot and destination for visitors, the bar serves classic cocktails and approachable fare in a relaxed, convivial setting. On Fridays and Saturdays, the rooftop garden opens to the public, offering sunset cocktails with views across downtown Charleston.

Steps from Charleston’s Best
The location makes exploring Charleston effortless: You’re just steps from the city’s most beloved sights. Start your morning with coffee at Harken Café or Brown’s Court Bakery. Then, wander toward the Historic Market or the waterfront at Waterfront Park. For lunch, grab a seat at 167 Raw or The Ordinary. And for dinner, FIG and Vern’s remain perennial favorites for thoughtful, ingredient-driven cooking.

Shops, galleries, and historic homes are all within walking distance, and evenings can be as lively or low-key as you like — whether that means a nightcap back at Scarborough & Squirrel or a stop at a cocktail or karaoke bar downtown.
