Patrick Lewis has always had a love of interiors. In New York City, he was a textile designer and later also a designer for a high-end bedding line. Then, in Charlotte, he began to design interiors for several show homes, and worked as a designer with Circa Interiors. Today, his approach with his self-titled Patrick Lewis Interiors is characterized by a “less is more” philosophy and an effortless elegance that Lewis pulls through each of his designs.

“Every piece in a room can’t be the most dramatic. Some pieces and accessories need to play more of a modest, supporting role that, when paired together with everything in the room, adds up to a complete look.”

This Charlotte project embodies that intent: Lewis’ design was driven by solid colors, and often ones that are neutral. He also lightened up each space for a home that’s airy, livable, and inviting. The house, at 5,000 square feet, has three bedrooms, three and a half baths, and four unique living spaces. The cohesive look is one full of a type of relaxed elegance that Lewis has perfected, while the home’s functionality is designed first and foremost for family living. Don Duffy Architecture, Alair Homes, and Susan Dudley Design helped bring this project, completed over the span of one year, to fruition.

The design itself was achieved in collaboration between Lewis and the client.

“I like to do my initial meetings with clients in their homes so that I can see what they like, and watch how they live and use a space on a day-to-day basis,” Lewis explains.

The main living room, for example, was carefully designed for entertaining large gatherings; watching football and playing bridge; it was a space the client needed to be able to use actively even though they wanted a refined look.

“Today, I use less of everything—less colors, accessories, and furniture—than I did 15 or 20 years ago.”

The kitchen, with cabinetry made by the 100-year-old Goodman Millwork, is clean and white with gold details—classic, simple, but usable for every member of the family. It’s an open and accessible space, with functional, stylish details.

The home also boasts a sweeping outdoor living space—a pool with a large poolhouse that is also an ideal part of the home for entertaining.
