Layton Interior Design under the direction of Layton Campbell in collaboration with builder Fenstermacher Custom Homes, is a thoughtful fusion of classic architecture and modern livability.
From the outset, the project demanded more than cosmetic updates. The original structure, though rich in character, felt dark and compartmentalized,. It had an inconsistent architectural language and a floor plan that stifled flow. J. Layton Interiors began with a detailed walk-through alongside the clients and contractor. This is an essential first step in understanding not only the home’s existing conditions, but also the clients’ vision, needs and aesthetic preferences.
The homeowners, a couple with a love for art, wine, and their two dogs, envisioned a space that could breathe. Walls were moved, millwork reimagined, and sightlines opened up across the entire main floor. The staircase was completely rebuilt, becoming both a functional centerpiece and a sculptural statement, crafted with precision by Interior Woods. Upstairs, the primary suite became a sanctuary, balancing understated luxury with comfort.
J. Layton Interior Design Finds the Right Materials
Material selections played a defining role in redefining the home’s character. White oak hardwoods replaced worn pine floors, immediately elevating the palette with warmth and continuity. In the kitchen, custom cabinetry painted in “Slumber Sloth” from Sherwin-Williams’ Emerald Collection provides a soft, grounding contrast to walls finished in Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee. The overall palette leans into warm, muted neutrals, creating a cohesive backdrop that feels both elevated and comfortable.
Craftsmanship and thoughtful detailing carry through every space, highlighted by Layton’s selections. The kitchen boasts a Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, while Harkey Tile and Stone surfaces bring texture and durability to key spaces. Decorative elements—from Bird Decorative Hardware to Urban Electric and Visual Comfort lighting—add polish without excess.
Furnishings and textiles embody both beauty and practicality. High-performance fabrics ensure longevity, especially important in a home designed as much for two energetic pups as for entertaining guests. A Harlequin fabric drapery softens the primary bedroom, while Designers Guild pillows provide visual interest in the family room. Unexpected moments, like a Kelly Ventura wallcovering in the powder room or Lee Jofa wallpaper on the mudroom ceiling, inject personality and charm.

Art and collection were central to the design narrative. The homeowner, an artist herself, required intentional spaces to display her work and pottery. Meanwhile, her partner’s passion for wine inspired integrated storage solutions throughout the kitchen and bar. Even the mudroom reflects the family’s priorities, featuring a playful “pup wall” that reimagines utility through a personal lens.
