A young family with two kids (three if you count the dog, which we do) sought a space to settle in the Myers Park neighborhood of Charlotte that would exude classical refinement. Their hope was to create a space that felt elegant yet still comfortable, timeless but personal. So, they enlisted the help of three of Charlotte’s finest professionals in the home industry. Architect Garrett Nelson, Gerrard Builders, and interior designer Shannon Bowman teamed up to build the custom home of this family’s dreams.
Throughout the home, a primary goal was to maximize natural light via ample and well-placed windows. Consequently, architect Garret Nelson drafted a smart floor plan that accomplished precisely this. He even folded windows into statement features like the grand stairwell and breakfast nook. A secondary goal was to ensure functionality. Between having kids at home and the rituals of daily life, the family’s lifestyle requires durability and efficiency. Gerrard Builders accounted for these needs in a flawlessly built home. Meanwhile, Shannon Bowman foregrounded the family’s lifestyle in her design selections.
Pops of organic texture, dramatic colors, and statement lighting complement and add to the character established through the house’s bones, such as curvature throughout the architecture. Textured wallcoverings add drama in some rooms while neutral velvets, linens, or weaves are leveraged to soften deeper tones where needed.
Standout Spaces
The main living room, which flows seamlessly to the breakfast nook and kitchen, is one of the standout spaces in the home. Here, Bowman took a soft approach with little pops of color here and there. Moreover, Bowman added texture and originality by installing upholstered cabinetry along the TV wall. Likewise, custom horn cabinet hardware and antique brass nailheads inject added personality.
Outside, the U shape of the back of the house neatly frames a finely landscaped courtyard. This area is easily visible to the interior via the house’s ample windows. A pool folly, near the pool at the back of the property provides an additional space to gather. Plus, bi-folding doors open up the space to the outdoor living. Additionally, the covered porch features an outdoor kitchen, bar seating area, and a beautiful fireplace.
Locally Sourced
The team behind this Myers Park home sourced materials and services from a troop of local and custom vendors. The roster of vendors included Level 5 Finish Group for paint and drywall, Southern Architectural Woodwork who created the custom curved staircase and railings, Charlotte-based Harkey Tile & Stone who provided the countertops, Hardwood Creations for Cabinets and Curated Surfaces for hardwoods, Design Services of Charlotte who created the custom dining banquette, and Finx Faux Finishing who hand-painted the ceiling in the formal dining room.
Almost every detail of this new Myers Park build was, quite literally, made for the family that now resides within. Ultimately, the result is an English manor-style home that is equal parts refined and functional.
