Laura Aguilar is the Owner and Principle Interior Designer for Laura Aguilar Interiors. Along with her team, Laura Aguilar offers Full Service Interior Design services specializing in designing homes for busy families.
Recently, she shared with us a project that’s even more special than usual; it’s one she and her husband recently completed together.
“My husband, Aaron, who is in Architecture also received his contractors license this year so we can begin our design/suild company we have been dreaming of,” Laura shares. “My husband and I have dreamed of starting a design build business together for a long time, and even though this is a crazy year to start a new business, we have been able to secure several new projects already!”

When and where was this project completed?
The master bedroom & bath was completed in July of 2020. This home is located near the lake in Mooresville, NC.

What was the overall look/feel that you hoped to achieve?
Our clients wanted a peaceful, calming space to retreat to every evening. They both love reading in bed and relaxing in their new space, and are thoroughly enjoying the “spa feeling” in their newly updated bathroom. Their updated master bedroom & bath is now a place they not only can’t wait to retire to every evening!
What were some of the primary things that the client was hoping to achieve?
For their master bath, our clients wanted a more useful floor plan including a large extended shower, built in hamper and storage and all new updated vanities and finishes. Their go-to vacation destinations are the outer banks so they love anything coastal so we tried to incorporate that vibe into their new updated spaces. For their master bedroom, they wanted warm calming colors and textures, incorporating both rooms so they flow well together.
Who are a few of the vendors used?
Most of the main items are from “to the trade only” vendors, but there is some greenery & flowers from Pike Nursery and some accessories from Dutchmans (both in the Cornelius area).
What are a few “take home tips” for anyone looking to spruce up their own rooms/homes?
I like to break up “furniture sets.” If you have a bed, dresser and bedside tables that all match, try replacing one or more of those matching pieces to create a more interesting, designed space. For my clients, we purchased a new upholstered bed to break up all the hard & dark surfaces. It made the room feel collected over the years as opposed to just bringing home a set from a box store. I like to help my clients see that it’s ok for all your furniture not to match! The feeling is a lot more cozy and thought through, creating spaces you really want to be in.
