Travel and design are intimately intertwined for one of the best Charlotte interior designers, Lisa Sherry of Lisa Sherry Interieurs. For Lisa Sherry’s clients, home is the ultimate getaway. But where Lisa often seeks and finds inspiration is away from home. In addition to her personal travels, design projects take her all over the country.
“It’s always an opportunity to see people, places and things with fresh eyes…In my world, travel is a beautiful muse,” Lisa shares.
For a creative person like Lisa, she finds traveling immensely clarifying and inspiring. “Recreation is essential to creation; it’s the essence of the word.”
Here, Lisa shares more about the intersection of travel with her design process and her dedication to creating homes that feel like the ultimate retreat. We get a chance to learn more about what makes her one of the best Charlotte interior designers.
Tell us about your relationship with travel. Are there certain ways to travel or places that you most enjoy?
I’m partial to a loose and flexible itinerary. I like to do the usual things in unusual places, gently immersing myself in the day-to-day experience of the destination. “Live beautiful” is my mantra. Travel is amazing, but to live beautifully in our own homes is the ultimate experience. This is what I seek to do in my designs. As for the pin drop, overall, I don’t do repeats – in design or travel. I like to look forward. There are exceptions: Paris, for example, the aesthetic that inspires my design studio. We are Lisa Sherry Interieurs, after all.
Are there any places you’ve visited that left an immediate impression or that you wanted to recreate aspects of?
For me, the sense of inspiration and discovery from travel is more ethereal than specific. It’s not about recreating a room, but about sensual immersion: sights, sounds, texture and even aromas. I’m always incorporating what I see into future projects.
How has your work evolved over the years?
Just like me as a person, my design aesthetic is always evolving. Yet, my approach to design, living and travel for that matter doesn’t really change with fleeting trends and fads. I create organic soulful spaces, very modern and today, with notes of classic grace. Design evolution comes in layers and nuances, all part of a beautiful life.
Are there certain aesthetics that most inspire your work?
For me, it’s all about the mix. Pairing old and new. Sleek and textured. Light and dark. Modern and classic. All in beautiful balance with thoughtful editing, set in a neutral palette with abundant natural light and touchpoints to the organic natural world.
Why do you think it’s important to continue to see new things and places to be a designer/artist?
When we travel, we leave home and our comfort zone. The art of travel is really a moveable feast. We carry the experience, pleasure, insights and awakenings uncovered with new places and people into our daily lives… and into our homes. Ultimately, my work is all about creating a beautiful life at home. Travel is an adventure, coming home is an embrace.
