From February 8 to August 30, The Mint Museum Randolph will feature “Classic Black: The Basalt Sculpture of Wedgwood and His Contemporaries.”
This stunning exhibit features over 100 ceramic objects from public and private collections in both England and the United States—all made from black basalt.
Black basalt was popularized in the late eighteen hundreds after Josiah Wedgewood added manganese and carr to the clay he worked with. This combination turned the clay into the deep black color that we see throughout his work today. Visitors can see a wide range of ceramics, from portrait medallions and ornate vases to life-size statues and detailed busts.
The Mint Museum is a cultural institution in Charlotte, North Carolina, that comprises Mint Museum Randolph and Mint Museum Uptown.
