Know Before You Go Tubing In York County
Tubing is the easiest way to revel in nature, soak up the sun, and enjoy the water with friends. However, having a plan before setting out on your tubing adventure is essential.
First things first, you need to pick a route. While there are several different starting destinations, we recommend that our Charlotte folks start their journey at the Lake Wylie Dam. Floating this picturesque 3.5-mile route to Riverwalk takes about 2-3 hours. If you’re up for a longer tubing experience, there are several other routes to extend your fun.
Tubing Routes:
Lake Wylie Dam to Riverwalk: 3.5 miles = approx. 2 to 3 hours to float
Riverwalk to Catawba Nation: 10.5 miles = approx. 5 to 8 hours to float
Catawba Nation to Landsford Canal: 9.7 miles = approx. 5 to 8 hours to float
Riverwalk to River Park: 2.9 Miles = approx. 2 to 3 hours to float
You should always check the dam release schedule to make your float as effortless as possible. Make sure to let someone know your route in case you get separated and have a way to communicate with one another should you need help.
Next, we recommend bringing two cars, one to park at your starting destination and one at your exit. This makes traveling with your tubes hassle-free. Plus, you can explore Fort Mill and Rock Hill before and after your tubing experience!
What To Bring With You
There are a few essentials you need to bring along with you to make for the best time. Of course, you will need a tube for everyone with you (plus one for your cooler if you want cold beverages on the water)! One like the Intex River Run is perfect because it is lightweight, has ropes and clips to connect with friends, and can be found at your local Dick’s Sporting Goods or Academy Sports. For any of your younger friends or inexperienced swimmers, bring a proper life jacket that fits your size, weight, and height. These are the basics you need for an unforgettable day away from home!
To elevate your experience tubing in York County, consider bringing items like sunscreen, water shoes, towels, cold drinks, a paddle, and a wet bag to keep all your valuables nice and dry.
Lastly, have fun! Tubing down the Catawba River is an easy way to enjoy the great outdoors with friends and family. You can stop to swim, hang out on the rocky shoals, or even take a shot on the rope swing!
Once you’ve reached your destination and worked up your appetite, try local favorites like Tony’s Cantina or Richie’s Italian Bistro. If you’re craving a sweet treat to beat the heat, indulge in some custard from Freddy’s.
