Wondering what you can do? Choosing where to spend your dollars and where to give economic support is one important way to be actively involved in amplifying black voices in our community.
The past few months have “added economic stress for businesses that were already on a path that was fragile,” Cathay Dawkins, founder of Black Business Owners of Charlotte, told QCity Metro. “It’s vital that the community understands what we’re facing and that we put as many resources as we can into Black businesses.”

Harvey B. Gantt Center
Temporarily closed, HBC Center is a vital community resource that serves as a vehicle for people to come celebrate African American art, history and culture. They are accepting donations during this time, and also offering a variety of important, inspiring virtual exhibitions on their website.
Good Life Co. Catering
While they continue to try to meet the demands of the pandemic, GLC catering still understans what it takes for an event to be a unique, memorable experience. Their expert chefs and staff members have extensive training and are extremely passionate about their craft. As a full-service catering company, you can use them for nearly any type of event need.
Cheryl Luckett of Dwell by Cheryl
Cheryl Luckett is a talented, long-time interior designer in Charlotte who believes her clients should dwell in a home they love; a place that gives them a sense of well-being both indoors and out. She describes her design aesthetic as sophisticated but approachable, easy and livable.
LaDara McKinnon of LaDara Fine Art
Multimedia artist LaDara McKinnon creates gorgeous visual art from her home base in Charlotte, from abstracts and landscapes to murals and ceramics. She takes commissions, mural requests, and works on a variety of personal projects.
Jeremiah Allen of Rook & King
Jeremiah Allen found himself craving a versatile fashion piece and set his sights on lapel pins. He couldn’t find any that captured a unique look, so Allen began handcrafting his own. By drawing inspiration from history, culture and even performance artists, he creates pieces that are truly one-of-a-kind.
Greg and SuBrina Collier of Leah & Louise and Uptown Yolk
Masters of comfort food, the Colliers had Leah & Louise slated to open during the pandemic, but the restaurateurs pivoted quickly by offering the option to order lunch or dinner online here for now at their new spot. The Colliers also own the Uptown Yolk in 7th Street Public Market, which has reopened for business as well.
Jonathan Stewart
The prominent former Panther now co-owns Charlotte Lately with his wife, Natalie Stewart, and the two remain heavily involved in Charlotte media and various community efforts.
Hade Robinson @cltstyleguy
Robinson is synonymous with Charlotte fashion: He’s acted as a contributor for the style section of dozens of publications and has hosted several events and seminars centered around the industry. He now manages a personal stylist team as a Styling Sales Manager at Nordstrom in SouthPark. He also has been featured multiple times on Charlotte Today, where he appears to give helpful fashion pointers to a broad audience. Check out his work today.
Monique Luck
As both a collage artist and muralist, Luck pulls inspiration for her works from real-life experiences and emotions. Her art has been showcased across the country in places like the African American Museum, South Carolina State Museum, and Heinz History Center Museum. Locally Luck’s work has been featured at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Art + Culture, the Mint Museum, and even Rock Hill’s City Hall. Dupp & Swat
Co-owned by siblings Dion “Dupp” and Davita “Swat” Galloway, this unique event space, boutique and gallery is located at 1824 Statesville Ave., Suite 105 in Camp North End. Reach out directly to see how you can support Dion and Davita’s efforts while most events remain on hold.
BLK MRKT
Co-owned by Dammit Wesley and Sir Will, this part art-gallery and part-studio collaborative connects local arts and photographers of color from its location in Camp North End. Right now, you can buy their Vibez photobook $25 online.
What The Fries
Need some comfort food? Chef Jamie Barnes, co-owner of What The Fries food truck with chef Greg Williams, is offering a Grab-&-Go meal for $11 that includes a turkey sandwich or turkey and pimento cheese sandwich, house-made mustard green slaw, house-made chips, and a drink. Check their schedule daily online for food truck locations.
Nyoni Couture
Owned by Nyoni Sioh and opened in 2012, this upscale men’s fashion and custom tailoring shop in Uptown brings the advantages of bespoke tailoring to even their off-the-shelf ready-to-wear items. According to Nyoni, the difference that good cut and design can make to ready-to-wear items is quite remarkable.
