When it’s fall in the Carolinas, we get an immediate itch to head to Asheville. This season in the mountains is just about perfect – crisp, scenic, and full of things to do, see, and experience. Here’s our guide to a weekender in one of our all-time favorite local cities.
Stay
Outside of town: The Omni Grove Park Inn is a no-brainer for a trip when it’s fall in Asheville. They’ve been serving guests for over a century, and the views are – truly – stunning. The massive, historic grounds have an unmatched ambiance. Once checked in, you don’t even have to leave if you don’t want – the resort has all the bars, restaurants, and cozy sitting areas (with roaring fires) you could want. It’s the perfect backdrop, and is easily accessible to downtown Asheville.
In town: For walkability and beautiful moutain views, you can’t beat the relaxed, modern Hyatt Place hotel. In addition to comfortable, clean, spacious guest rooms, it includes a stylish rooftop bar, an indoor pool, and a 24/7 fitness center. Walk out the door and you’re in the heart of the bustling downtown area or the arts district in five minutes flat. Back inside its doors, you’ll be able to enjoy an end of evening cocktail and all the comfort and relaxation you need.
Eat
When it comes to food, we have more than a few recommendations. Asheville is one of our favorite foodie towns. If you only have a few days to soak in this funky mountain town, we’d recommend grabbing a bite at Rhubarb (contemporary farm-to-table in a rustic setting), Chai Pani (crazy-good Indian street snacks in a cool, colorful little space), and The Market Place, with its locally sourced, unique, and delicious take on American cuisine.
Drink
Just like the food, there are a plethora of can’t-miss cocktails and beers in this town. We’d recommend you stop in to Bull and Beggar to sit at the atmospheric bar and order a whisky drink, swing by Wicked Weed for a fresh brew, and post up at 5 Walnut Wine Bar for a casual night out. No list is complete either without mentioning Battery Park Book Exchange, which is a gem for its unique combination of book shop meets champagne bar.
See
Tour the grounds of the Omni first and foremost – we were blown away by the scale of this place. Then, do the classic and head to the Parkway for an autumnal drive that beautifully sums up this season in North Carolina. Finally, The Biltmore is always worth a visit, and by November it is decked out for the holiday season in true luxurious fashion.
