Lee Hall, North Carolina native and renowned Abstract Expressionist, leaves her legacy with an exhibition featuring her final abstract landscape paintings at Jerald Melberg Gallery.
Throughout her life, Lee Hall established herself as a distinguished painter, academic, historian, and university leader and professor. Lee was born in Lexington and studied at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro before finishing her studies at New York University. Her work has been reviewed favorably in periodicals such as ArtNews, Art in America, The New Yorker, Artforum, Arts Magazine, and The New York Times. Currently, Lee’s paintings are exhibited in permanent collections at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Hudson River Museum, the Mint Museum, and the Johnson Collection, to name a few.
Her poetic landscapes are iterations of the tradition of abstraction derived from meditations on nature.
In honor of Lee’s passing, The Jerald Melberg Gallery is presenting an exhibition featuring her most recent abstract landscapes completed before her death in April. Her inspiration includes the Mediterranean and American landscapes.
“Her paintings, titled by the locale they represent, were rendered using sophisticated, muted color relationships and varied, textural painting techniques. Her poetic landscapes are iterations of the tradition of abstraction derived from meditations on nature, whose forbearers include a myriad of great minds from painters of the Sung Dynasty to modernist John Marin.”
The exhibition will be on display from July 22 to September 9, with an opening reception on July 21.
