Nestled in the mountains, 5,000 feet above the world, The Swag is one of the South’s top resorts. It is the epitome of rustic luxury. Located in Waynesville, NC, just 40 minutes west of Asheville, The Swag has been called “the most romantic hideaway.” The all-inclusive mountain resort is open for its 40th season and continues to offer guests an escape from the crowded city within its historical walls.

The 250-acre mountain top inn was originally built as a family home in 1971 by innkeeper Denner Matthews. Just over a decade later in 1982, the Swag opened as an inn. It features 16 different lodging options. Patrons can choose between the Swag House rooms, Chestnut Lodge rooms, or cabins and suite-style rooms. The rooms feature original artwork, woven rugs, and most include private balconies. Romantic goers can take advantage of the outdoor soaking tubs, jacuzzis, and saunas in the Matthews’ Suite or Hideaway room. Other rooms offer wood-burning fireplaces and steam showers. The room rates include all meals, hors d’oeuvres, and cookies and nuts daily.

Situated along the Cataloochee Divide, The Swag provides a breathtaking view of six of North Carolina’s highest mountain ranges. Take in the Black Mountains to the east, Great Smokies to the northwest, or the Plott Balsams and Richland Balsams to the southwest from this mountain resort.  Nature-lovers can take advantage of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park which lies just minutes outside of the resort door and is a popular location for hikes and strolls. The historic Divide Trail passes just behind the inn as well.

Do and Dine

There’s something to do for everyone, whether you’re looking to lounge and relax or have a daytime adventure. Guests can enjoy a game of racquetball or badminton on the courts, or play croquet while enjoying the view. After a long day outdoors, relax in the resort’s sauna, enjoy a massage in the massage therapy room, or have a romantic picnic in one of the resort’s five hideaways.

For dining, the resort provides seasonally inspired menus from their award-winning restaurant. Hors d’oeuvres are available daily at 6 p.m. on the front porch. Enjoy a hearty breakfast omelet or locally sourced trout for dinner. A selection of beer and wines are also available to complement meals. The resort also provides packed lunches for hikers. During the week, guests can enjoy a picnic buffet from Gooseberry Knob on Wednesdays or a barbecue feast on Thursdays. Sunday brunch is also a guest favorite.
