Since January 2024, a unique and fresh new addition to the South End CLT fitness community kicked off on the LoSo Rail Trail. Gritbox, an approachable and thoughtful spin on the traditional kickboxing fitness studio, found its start in Charleston, South Carolina. Director of Operations Kelly Kennedy and Vice President of Marketing and Operations Colleen Hamilton share that, in their search to expand within the Carolinas, Charlotte was an easy choice.
Gritbox is just a short walk away from some of the city’s favorite cafes, restaurants, breweries, and more. Gritbox has already proven itself a guided workout opportunity like no other offered in Charlotte. The vision was to make fitness feel more approachable for those of all levels. At the same time, the intent was for Grit Box to be a space brimming with enthusiasm.
Take a Swing at Realizing Your Potential
Particularly, Kennedy and Hamilton share that Gritbox’s mission is to ensure that anyone who attends, novice or advanced, can leave each class feeling more confident. They hope that their community will feel motivated toward their fitness goals. In addition, they want to empower the whole individual “to get what they want out of life.” Their programming meets participants where they already are. Moveover, participants are encouraged to select the individual weight they feel comfortable lifting. Plus, they can go through each exercise at their preferred pace.
This South End CLT fitness studio offers 40 classes every week between 6:15 am and 6:30 pm. Workouts consistently run 45 minutes “so you can grind it out and then get on with your day.” Those attending their first session should arrive early so coaches can walk through stations and boxing strikes. For those hoping to give Gritbox a go, start with a 10-day trial of classes for only $30. For those interested in a more personalized approach, Gritbox hosts personal training sessions for strength training or boxing technique.
Beyond physical empowerment alone, this fitness community seeks to unlock a holistic approach to encouraging your inner grit, emphasizing the benefits of tending regularly to both your mental and physical health. For this reason, Gritbox frequently hosts events to connect over discussions surrounding mindfulness. For example, in July 2024, Gritbox hosted a panel on deconstruction of mental health stigma and its correlation to the positive neurological impacts of practicing physical fitness. In a similar vein, sharing meaningful connections is truly at the heart of this studio. At Grit Box the objective is to build fellowship around the spirit of grit.
