The Swag, a 14-room mountaintop hideaway in North Carolina, will host its first annual Oktoberfest on Thursday, September 14. This marks a new era for The Swag, which has resided in dry Haywood County since opening to the public in 1981. In November 2016, voters repealed the dry county designation, which has been in effect since prohibition, and alcohol can now be sold.
The Swag’s Oktoberfest will kick off at 4 p.m. with owners Deener and Dan Matthews tapping the keg provided by partner Wicked Weed Brewery. The Mountaintop Polka “ Oompah” band will perform and a bountiful Oktoberfest buffet prepared by Executive Chef Jake Schmidt will be served. Dishes include wursts, spӓtzle, sauerbraten, sauerkraut, German potato salad and braised pork shank.
The Oktoberfest celebration is included in the all-inclusive rate for guests. For non-hotel guests who wish to attend Oktoberfest, held from 4 to 7 p.m., the cost is $64 per person.
Rates at The Swag start at $520 per night, with a two-night minimum, and are available through November 25th. All prices include a hearty breakfast, picnic lunch, evening social hour on the front porch with hors d’oeuvres, four-course dinner and welcome gift.
