Hunt Slonem returns to Charlotte this fall with support from the New Gallery of Modern Art. Slonem is an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker perhaps best known for his Neo-Expressionist paintings of tropical birds. His art is often based on a personal aviary in which he has been keeping from 30 to over 100 live birds of various species
Influenced by the exotic, lush landscapes of his childhood years in Hawaii, Slonem’s richly colored, impressionistic bird paintings are collected into a single, extravagant volume with his latest book. The book features hundreds of luxurious artworks, with a foreword by Jacqueline Bograd Weld, and a thoroughly enlightening and entertaining essay by Anthony Haden-Guest. Visit the gallery on Wednesday, December 13 between 5 pm and 7 pm to meet Hunt and to purchase a signed copy. If you’re familiar with Hunt’s work and previous books, you know his signature is more than just his handwriting and also includes a one-of-a-kind animal sketch.
Forming the perfect setting for Hunt’s book signing on December 13, New Gallery will fill their space with a luscious selection of Hunt Slonem’s latest paintings of birds, bunnies, butterflies, and perhaps even his more rare historical portraits, on view November 30 – January 3, 2018. This show will also mark the gallery’s 6th anniversary, so go celebrate!
