The face of the Charlotte skyline is changing rapidly, and alongside it, residential design is, too. Kelly Strickland, of Strickland Building Group, is one of the forces pushing design forward in the Queen City, by focusing his efforts on high-end construction and renovation. Strickland himself is a second generation Charlotte home builder, passionate about building in the very area where he grew up. Now, at eighteen years in, Kelly says it was always clear to him that a profession in residential building and real estate was where his life’s work lay.
This modern classic new build in the Cotswold area demonstrates what Strickland does best: The home combines innovation and industry trends with time-honored design principles, resulting in a home meant to stand the test of time. The home also embodies the neutral color pallet paired with strong architectural statements that has become Strickland Building Group’s signature.
The home stands at 4,200 square feet, with three bedrooms, four and a half baths, and six living and entertaining areas. The goal, decided upon between Strickland and his clients, was to have an open floor plan with an intentional use of space. The clients wanted room enough to serve their lifestyle without leftover, surplus square footage. The home also needed to be filled with natural light to allow for the property views that include a veranda and pool.
Greg Perry, of Greg Perry Design, led the design plans while Missy Luczak Smith styled the interior. From start to finish, including the pool, the project took just shy of a year to actualize. Today, it stands in all its unique glory, with a light-drenched reading room that showcases the homeowner’s most special art and artifacts, an inviting outdoor area, modern touches like the plaster detailing and lighting fixtures, interior windows that offer views of various rooms, and even a powder room that can be discovered by way of a hidden door.
The furnishings, from the rugs to the array of modern and classic seating choices to the artwork, are a collection of things the homeowners had and loved already alongside pieces that were specially designed and selected for this new build.
All together, it’s a liveable space that’s undeniably sophisticated, timeless but on trend, and manages to fit seamlessly into the Cotswold neighborhood while still helping push the design principles of the area one step further.
“When the correct balance between form and function is achieved,” Stickland says, “ it results in a home where the client can enjoy their lifestyle and can know the design will stand the test of time—to me, that’s a successful project.”
